Cradling the Himalayas between northern India and Tibet, Nepal is a soul-stirring place where you’ll find awe-inspiring snow-capped peaks, jungles prowled by Bengal tigers and a charismatic capital peppered with tiered pagodas and golden shrines. Home to eight of the world’s highest peaks – all of which are over 8,000m – this is mountaineering heaven. Hike across crystal-clear rivers and cool green valleys in the Annapurna foothills, or brave the epic trek to Everest base camp.
Visa requirements may change, so for the most up to date information we recommend using our Entry Requirements tool. Alternatively, check the Nepali embassy website in your country of departure.
Recommended vaccinations for Nepal include hepatitis a, hepatitis b, typhoid, diphtheria, polio, Japanese encephalitis and rabies if you’re in rural areas. However, as advice can often change, you can check out our Entry Requirements tool for the most up-to-date details on vaccination requirements.
Nepal has an incredibly diverse climate due to its varied topography. The average annual temperature is around 18°C (64°F), but it varies significantly with altitude. In the lowland Terai region, temperatures can reach up to 30°C (86°F) in summer, while in the high Himalayas, temperatures can drop to a Baltic -20°C (-4°F) in winter.
There’s also a monsoon season here which runs from June to September — expect there to be plenty of rainfall during this time.
The best time to visit Nepal tends to be during the months of October and February. The weather is at its driest and temperatures are mild, making it ideal for outdoor activities like trekking, climbing, and exploring the country's various different cultural sites. This is also when the skies are generally clear, offering spectacular panoramic views of the mountains.
It’s customary in Asia to tip service providers such as waiters, at approximately 10%, depending on the service. Tipping is expected — though not compulsory — and shows an expression of satisfaction with the people who have assisted you on your tour.
There are several times during the trip where there is opportunity to tip the local guides or drivers we use. You may do this individually, or your CEO will offer to collect the money and tip as a group. Recommendations for tipping drivers and local guides would range from USD $1-2 per person, per day depending on the quality and length of the service; ask your CEO for specific recommendations based on the circumstances and culture. Also at the end of each trip if you felt your G Adventures CEO did an outstanding job, tipping is appreciated. The amount is entirely a personal preference, however as a guideline USD $20-30 per person, per week can be used.
Internet access in Nepal is generally ok, and it’s certainly been improving in recent years. You’ll find it better in cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara, but in rural regions, it may be less reliable or even non-existent.
Yes, you’ll find plenty of ATMs in Nepal! You'll find them in major cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara, as well as in some tourist destinations such as Chitwan National Park and Lumbini. Most ATMs accept Visa and Mastercard cards, though you may be charged a fee for this — check with your bank before you travel. If you’re heading out into rural areas, it’s a good idea to carry cash with you in case you can’t locate an ATM.
Same-sex relations are legal in Nepal, and the country recognises transgender people here too. That being said, society can still be relatively conservative, so it pays to be discreet — particularly in rural areas.
As part of their commitment, all CEOs receive LGBTQ+ inclusion training so every traveller feels respected and welcomed on all of our tours. We commit to making our tours a safe and inclusive place for people to express their authentic selves without judgement, free from any discriminatory language or harassment.
While travelling with G Adventures, all travellers must treat each other with dignity and respect to create an environment that is positive, safe, and where everyone feels welcome. You can find out more via our LGBTQ+ travel page.
Over 120 different languages are spoken in Nepal, including the official language Nepali. English is spoken in numerous tourist destinations, and other widely-spoken languages here include Maithili, Bhojpuri, Tharu, Tamang, Newar, and Magar.
In a word, no — the tap water here isn’t generally safe to drink. You’re best sticking to bottled water which is cheap and readily available.
Please note however that all drinks provided on our tours are safe to drink (including drinks with ice), as well as the water in most hotels and restaurants visited on tour. If in doubt, please ask your CEO for further info.
Nepal is generally considered very safe for travellers, but as with everywhere else in the world, petty crime does exist. Be vigilant in large cities like Kathmandu and keep your valuables hidden away. Natural disasters like earthquakes are also a risk here — take heed of local advice.
G Adventures takes all reasonable measures to ensure your safety and enjoyment while travelling with us. All of the included activities are properly vetted and regularly checked by us, and we take great care in choosing the right transportation, stays throughout your trip, and guides to lead your tour. However, there are always inherent risks when travelling — you can find out more via our travel safety page.
