Lodged firmly in the center of Europe, Hungary has been ruled by various empires and each has left its mark. Straddling the Danube, the twin city of Budapest began life as a Roman outpost and rivals Vienna as the most elegant city on the river. Wide avenues and cathedrals are watched over by imposing Buda Castle. Hungary’s thermal baths will pamper you, its wine beguile you, and its architecture stun you, especially its neo-Gothic parliament building – one of Europe’s most ornate.

Hungary experiences a continental climate with four distinct seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn. Winters (December to February) tend to be cold with temperatures between -3 to 4°C (26.6 to 39.2°F) — snow and ice are common too. Spring sees temperatures between 5 and 22°C (41 to 71.6°F) and moderate rainfall, whereas Summer sees temperatures of around 15 to 28°C (59 to 82.4°F) with plenty of sun. Autumn brings cooler temperatures and some rainfall, with temperatures ranging from 7 to 22°C (44.6 to 71.6°F).
The best time to visit Hungary is generally during Spring (April to June) and Autumn (September to October). These periods offer pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and a variety of cultural events like the Budapest Spring Festival and the Jewish Cultural Festival. Winter (December to February) is very cold, but it’s a good time to visit if you're interested in Christmas markets and a festive atmosphere.
While conventions can vary from country to country, tipping is customary in Europe. A general rule is 10% of the bill for wait staff, and a smaller amount (€1 or €2) for other service providers.
Tipping is an expected, though not compulsory, component of your tour programme, and an expression of satisfaction with the people who have assisted you on your tour. There are several times during the trip where there is opportunity to tip the local guides. You may do this individually, or your CEO will offer to collect the money and tip as a group. Recommendations for tipping local guides would range from €3 to €5 per day, depending on the quality and length of the service. Ask your CEO for specific recommendations based on the circumstances and culture.
At the end of each trip, if you felt your G Adventures CEO did an outstanding job, tipping is expected and appreciated. The precise amount is a personal preference, however €30 to €40 per person, per week can be used as a guideline.
Internet access in Hungary is generally quite good and continues to improve. You’ll find Wi-Fi in many public places like restaurants and cafes. Note that if you’re using data on your phone from outside the EU, you may be subject to roaming charges. In rural areas, internet may not be as reliable.
Yes, ATMs are widely available in Hungary. You’ll find them in airports, bus and train stations, shopping centres, and banks. ATMs are common in cities, while in smaller towns and villages they might be less frequent.
Most ATMs in Hungary accept international debit and credit cards, especially from Visa and Mastercard networks. It’s a good idea to check with your bank before travelling to ensure compatibility, and note that there may be withdrawal fees.

Homosexuality is legal in Hungary, though same-sex marriage is not. In 2021, the country passed a law banning teaching LGBTQ+ content to minors, which sparked controversy. While issues are unlikely, it pays to be discreet.
As part of their commitment, all CEOs receive LGBTQ+ inclusion training so every traveller feels respected and welcomed on all of our tours. We commit to making our tours a safe and inclusive place for people to express their authentic selves without judgement, free from any discriminatory language or harassment.
While travelling with G Adventures, all travellers must treat each other with dignity and respect to create a positive and safe environment. You can find out more via our LGBTQ+ travel page.
The official language spoken in Hungary is Hungarian, spoken by almost the entire population. Other languages spoken include German, Slovak, Croatian, Romanian, and Serbian.
In a word, yes — tap water is safe to drink in Hungary. We recommend you bring a reusable water bottle for environmental reasons as there are numerous filling stations.
Hungary is generally considered a safe country for travellers, with a relatively low crime rate. Most visits are trouble-free. However, like any destination, it’s important to stay vigilant, especially in tourist areas where pickpocketing and scams can occur.
G Adventures takes all reasonable measures to ensure your safety and enjoyment while travelling with us. All of the included activities are properly vetted and regularly checked, and we take great care in choosing the right transportation, stays, and guides to lead your tour. However, there are always inherent risks when travelling — you can find out more via our travel safety page.
