Frequently Asked Questions about our New Zealand tours

Visa requirements may change, so for the most up to date information we recommend using our Entry Requirements tool. Alternatively, check the New Zealand embassy’s website in your country of departure.

There aren’t any specific vaccine requirements needed for New Zealand. However, as advice can often change, you can check out Entry Requirements tool for the most up-to-date details on vaccination requirements.

New Zealand’s weather can vary quite a bit depending on where you are and the time of year. However, generally, Summers offer sunny days with temperatures of around 20 to 25°C (68 to 77°F), and Winters can bring cool temperatures — particularly within the South Island. It can get down into the minuses at altitude, though it tends to average around 5 to 12°C (41 to 53.6°F).

The rainiest season varies depending on the region. In the North Island, you can expect the most rainfall during the Winter months (June to August). In the South, expect more rain during the Summer (December to February).

The best time to visit New Zealand largely depends on what you want to experience. Summer brings the best weather — ideal for outdoor activities like hiking — and there’s also plenty of festivals here during this period. Expect more crowds though.

Winters are great for alpine sports like skiing and snowboarding, though some outdoor activities will be limited due to weather conditions.

Autumn (March to May) and Spring (September to November) bring fewer crowds and both seasons are great for road trips, wine-tasting tours, and more.

It’s not customary in New Zealand to tip service providers, but if you do experience outstanding service, then it’s good to do so. Such service would only usually be in places like quality restaurants and it would be very rare that you would tip more than 10%. Unless specifically asked to do so at the time (by your CEO), do not tip your local guides.

At the end of each trip if you felt your G Adventures Chief Experience Officer did an outstanding job, you may consider a tip. A basic guideline would be USD $ 20-25 per person, per week.

Internet access in New Zealand is generally excellent, with widespread availability and high speeds. You’ll find free Wi-Fi in most public places like restaurants, bars, and libraries. However, expect it to be better in major cities and towns than in rural areas.

You’ll find ATMs in cities, towns, and even smaller villages across the country. They’re commonly located in bank branches, shopping centres, and convenience stores too. Most accept major international cards (such as Visa and Mastercard), though some may charge a fee — check with your bank directly for further details.

As currency exchange rates can fluctuate often we ask that you refer to the following website for daily exchange rates: www.xe.com.
