The rainforests of Borneo are some of the most biodiverse in the world, home to thousands of rare species including the critically endangered orangutan. The cliffs of Gunung Mulu hide a secret revealed only at sunset, when a mass exodus of 3 million bats exit for dinner. Borneo’s towns and villages are no less thrilling, and you can learn the traditions of the island’s indigenous tribes. Top off your trip with a sunrise trek up Mt. Kinabalu, Malaysia’s highest mountain.
Visa requirements may change, so for the most up to date information we recommend using our Entry Requirements tool. Alternatively, check the Bornean embassy website in your country of departure.
Recommended vaccinations for Borneo include hepatitis a, hepatitis b, typhoid, diphtheria, tetanus, and Japanese encephalitis and rabies if you’re heading into rural areas. However, as advice can often change, you can check out our Entry Requirements tool for the most up-to-date details on vaccination requirements.
The weather in Borneo is tropical, and is characterised by both high humidity and high temperatures throughout the year. There are two main seasons: the dry season (usually from March to October) and the wet season (from November to February). Average temperatures typically range from 24 to 32°C (75 to 90°F) — though it can get even warmer at some points of the year. Rainfall tends to be highest during the wet season, though you should also expect rainfall at other times of the year too.
The best time to visit Borneo generally falls between March and October, which is the dry season. This is the best time to go hiking and enjoy activities like wildlife watching, as the animals tend to be more active and visible. June is also a great time to visit, as you’ll be able to catch the Gawai Dayak Festival.
It’s customary in Asia to tip service providers such as waiters, at approximately 10%, depending on the service. Tipping is expected — though not compulsory — and shows an expression of satisfaction with the people who have assisted you on your tour.
There are several times during the trip where there is opportunity to tip the local guides or drivers we use. You may do this individually, or your CEO will offer to collect the money and tip as a group. Recommendations for tipping drivers and local guides would range from USD $1.50-3.50 per person, per day depending on the quality and length of the service; ask your CEO for specific recommendations based on the circumstances and culture. Also at the end of each trip if you felt your G Adventures CEO did an outstanding job, tipping is appreciated. The amount is entirely a personal preference, however as a guideline USD $20-25 per person, per week can be used.
In terms of internet connectivity, it really depends on where you are in Borneo. In cities like Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, and Miri, you’ll find good internet connectivity with a range of options, including free Wi-Fi in hotels, cafes, and restaurants. Internet access will be much more limited in rural areas — and perhaps even non-existent in areas like the rainforest. Be prepared.
Yes, there are ATMs in Borneo, especially in urban areas and larger towns and cities like Kota Kinabalu. Be aware that using international cards may incur transaction fees, and you should check with your bank that your card will work before you travel. ATMs may be less common or nonexistent in rural areas, so you should make sure that you carry cash with you if you’re heading off grid.
Borneo is shared between three different countries — Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei. None of these countries are LGBTQ+-friendly, and same-sex relationships are actually illegal in Malaysia and Brunei — the latter even has stoning to death as a punishment. It goes without saying then that you should really be discreet here and not show any public displays of affection.
As part of their commitment, all CEOs receive LGBTQ+ inclusion training so every traveller feels respected and welcomed on all of our tours. We commit to making our tours a safe and inclusive place for people to express their authentic selves without judgement, free from any discriminatory language or harassment.
While travelling with G Adventures, all travellers must treat each other with dignity and respect to create an environment that is positive, safe, and where everyone feels welcome. You can find out more via our LGBTQ+ travel page.
Borneo is home to a rich tapestry of languages due to various ethnic groups which call it home. Malay is the official language, and is spoken by the majority of the population. Iban, Bidayuh, Kadazan-Dusun, Kayan, and Kenyah are also widely spoken here too, and English is widely spoken in tourist areas.
In a word, no — the tap water in Borneo isn’t generally safe to drink. You’re best sticking to bottled water which is widely available.
Please note however that all drinks provided on our tours are safe to drink (including drinks with ice), as well as the water in most hotels and restaurants visited on tour. If in doubt, please ask your CEO for further info.
Borneo is generally considered safe for travellers, but as with any destination in the world, it's wise to take precautions while you’re here. Petty crime, such as pickpocketing, can occur — particularly in large cities. Keep your eyes on your belongings. You should also be mindful of health risks such as dengue fever.
G Adventures takes all reasonable measures to ensure your safety and enjoyment while travelling with us. All of the included activities are properly vetted and regularly checked by us, and we take great care in choosing the right transportation, stays throughout your trip, and guides to lead your tour. However, there are always inherent risks when travelling — you can find out more via our travel safety page.
